Hemorrhoids!!!! It's so embarrassing to talk about them but all they are basically just varicose veins in your butt! They occur when there is some kind of increase in pressure most commonly associated with pregnancy and constipation and a low-fiber diet. They can also be seen in alcoholics and others with cirrhosis of the liver causing portal hypertension and venous backup. This is what hemorrhoids look like in the lab, very congested appearing purple fragments of the inside and outside of the rectal/anal area.
When we slice them up you can actually see the dilated vessels filled with blood. When a person has these in the anal rectal area and then poops- it can cause a tremendous amount of pain. It can also fill the toilet with bright red blood or cause blood on the toilet paper when they wipe. Hemorrhoids can shrink and go away on their on but if not their are non surgical and surgical treatments available.
